I chose this recording because it captures the true traditional feel of Bali dance and music. This specific kind of dance is called Legong which is a traditional dance from Bali known for the bright colored customs, intricate finger movement, and intense eye contact from the performers. Throughout this piece, the musics dynamics change. Overall, it’s a fast piece but has moments where it switches from fast to slow. The type of music played in the background is called Gamelan orchestra. It is made up of a combination of different tuned percussion instruments: Saron, Gendèr, Slenthem, Gong Ageng, Bonang, and Kenong and Kempul. The Saron, Gendèr, and Slenthem are metallophones, and the Gong Ageng, Bonang, and Kenong and Kempul are gongs and gong-chimes. I ended up choosing this specific piece because I think it really embodies the true music and dance culture of Bali. I used to play percussion in high school, so to hear another countries percussion is very interesting. I have always wanted to go to Bali and to learn about their culture seems pretty important.
