I selected “Tarana” by Ravi Shankar because I enjoyed its fast pace and the different sounds used throughout the song. Ravi Shankar was an important Indian musician and composer who was well known for playing the sitar. This piece is based on the Indian classical tarana style, which focuses heavily on rhythm and vocal syllables rather than lyrics with a specific meaning. Both the sitar and tabla are used throughout the course of this song. I found the song interesting because the vocals, instruments, and percussion work together to create an energetic sound. I chose this example because it gave me a better understanding of Indian classical music and sounded very different from the music I usually listen to.
