I chose “Silent City” by Kayhan Kalhor and the Silk Road Ensemble from Iran. The music combines Persian musical traditions with other musical styles from around the world. Kayhan Kalhor plays the kamancheh, which is a traditional Persian bowed string instrument. The song has an emotional sound, with many instruments working together to create different melodies and moods. Some parts sound peaceful, while others feel more intense. I chose this song because I thought it was interesting how it brings together different musical traditions and cultures to create something unique.
