The song I chose is called “Pol,” and it was performed by an Iranian singer called Googoosh. Googoosh is a very famous Iranian singer and became popular through singing and acting in the 1960s and 70s. Her career has lasted over six decades, and she is currently 76 years old. However, the song I chose debuted in an Iranian film in 1976, when Googoosh was much younger. “Pol” means “bridge” in English, and the song explores the idea of supporting someone going through a hard time, so that nobody has to face their challenges alone. The reason I chose this example is because I really liked how Googoosh’s voice sounds almost soothing while she sings. In the background of this song, I can hear many string instruments that sound like violins, as well as an instrument keeping a steady beat that sounds like a tambourine. Together, Googoosh’s voice and the instruments create a calming but emotional vibe that I really enjoyed.
