I chose “Pasoori” by Ali Sethi and Shae Gill because of its vibrant, upbeat energy and the seamless way it bridges traditional and modern musical styles. I originally discovered the track through a Spotify playlist while searching Google for popular South Asian songs. After watching the music video, I was immediately drawn to its rich cultural expression, which pairs traditional folk instruments like the mandolin and bağlama with modern electronic beats alongside expressive dance. Beyond its infectious sound, the song carries a deeper emotional purpose, expressing the bittersweet pain of unrequited love and separation. In Punjabi, the word “Pasoori” translates to a difficult mess or dilemma, capturing the exact inner turmoil, longing, and unfulfilled desire described in the lyrics. In the end, I selected this piece because it not only portrays a universal human emotion, but also serves as a powerful cultural bridge that unites regionals with global contemporary music across Asia/the World.
