This version of My Favorite Things is performed by The Sachal Jazz ensemble from Lahore, Pakistan and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet.

This piece is originally by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the tune “My Favorite Things” from the musical The Sound of Music. Coltrane first recorded this piece in 1960 in an interpretation that already sounded radically different from the original, especially with his well known “avant garde” sound. In the following seven years, up until his death in 1967, Coltrane made “My Favorite Things” a regular part of his concert repertoire.

I’ve always been interested in jazz and the musicianship behind the complex nature of it. But to see it combined with a completely different culture and influence is amazing! Beautiful mashup of two worlds playing as one is a great thing to witness.

The flute sound is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. The bending and musicality behind it is incredible. That little piece of bamboo comes alive in the hands of the amazing performer! The solos from the tabla, the sitar, and the flute are all little interjections from the South Asian influence which really move the piece to a different level.
