The song I selected is “mejikuhibiniu” by Tenxi, Suisei, and Jemsii. It was released in June 2025 with Jemsii serving as the primary producer. I did a deep search and found that the title comes from a well-known Indonesian mnemonic for the colors of the rainbow, which are merah, jingga, kuning, hijau, biru, nila, ungu. In the lyrics, the phrase is used as a metaphor for a once colorful romantic relationship that falls into betrayal and heartbreak in the end. The song starts off with bright, affectionate verses and turns into more confrontational and resigned lyrics, reflecting the shift from ideal love to dissociation throughout a relationship. Musically, it blends Indonesian hip-hop with dangdut-influenced rhythms, forming a catchy, mid-tempo track that feels both contemporary and rooted in local popular styles. I encountered the song through my Malaysian friend here at SNC, and he says that although it’s an older song, it is still very popular. I chose this example because the reuse of a childhood memory in order to tell a story is striking, and the sound makes the track immediately engaging even though I don’t understand the language.
