I chose “Hymn to Ra and Osiris,” a piece inspired by ancient Egyptian music composed by Jeffrey Goodman. The lyrics are based on ancient Egyptian religious texts honoring Ra and Osiris. The song features both male and female voices singing in harmony, creating a hymn-like sound with long, sustained notes and a slow tempo. The vocals are accompanied by what sounds like a tambourine, drums, metallic percussion, and a plucked string instrument. The melody has repeated phrases, and the combination of the instruments and vocal harmonies gives the music a ceremonial and mysterious feeling. The end has an interrupted beat change and is a solo of just the instruments and no vocals. I chose this song because I liked how the male and female voices blended together and how the different instruments complemented the vocals. I also thought it was interesting to hear a modern interpretation of ancient Egyptian religious music.
