Flowing Water, or previously known as High Mountains Flowing Water, is a very traditional and historic Chinese Guqin piece. The piece goes through 9 sections, each one demonstrating a different stage of water in its life cycle. For example, the beginning of the piece is very subtle and quiet as it supposed to represent morning dew or water melting from ice. Unfortunately, I am unable to identify the Guqin player in this specific recording, but the song was originally played by BoYa, a student at the time whose teacher believed BoYa’s music lacked feeling, according to a Chinese fable. The fable talks about the important and cherished bond between the listener and the performer and friendship born from music. I choose this example not only because of its beautiful use of the Guqin, but also because of its extensive history in Chinese music.
