The song I selected is Bossa by Ahmed Malek, an Algerian composer who wrote music for more than a hundred films and television productions. The song blends jazz with sounds from North Africa and the Middle East. The foundation of the song is jazz, where there is syncopated rhythms, a relaxed swinging groove, and a bossa nova style feel which leans to the name of the song. The flute like instrument that plays the main melody is a Ney, which is the Arabic equivalent of the flute. This allows the song to sound both familiar and unexpected, as you can hear the slight difference in the reedy tones compared to Western flutes, but it still is recognizable as a flute. I chose this song as of its heavy jazz influence combined with instruments and sounds that set it apart from the jazz I usually hear.
