After watching Throw Down Your Heart I grew interested in the origins of the banjo, and how they are played in Africa.  The film correctly states that the banjo originated in Africa, and after some research I found a great example of African style banjo playing.  Often they are played in groups with other banjos, or chordophones, and some kind of percussion.  Most of the bands in this video use tambourine sounding percussion to match the higher pitch and quicker sound of the banjo.  The playing is very virtuosic with lots of flourishes and and ornamentation.
