I chose “Nassam Alayna El Hawa,” performed by Lebanese singer Fairuz and composed by the Rahbani brothers. Sung in Arabic, the song expresses nostalgia and longing for home. Its musical arrangement included the buzuq, a long-necked string instrument, and a lively rhythmic pattern that creates an upbeat feeling. As the song progresses, changes in rhythm and vocals help communicate the sadness and longing. This connects to our class discussion of how musical characteristics can convey meaning and emotion. I chose this example because I thought the theme of missing home was relatable, and I was interested in how music can communicate that feeling across different languages and cultures.
