I chose “The Left Hand Refers To The Moon (左手指月),” a piece from China performed on the guzheng. This string instrument is played by plucking the strings rather than strumming them like a guitar. The melody has some repetitive fragments, which give the song a consistent and recognizable sound. The notes have some bending as the player pushes on the end of the string while plucking. I noticed some parts of the melody have a more Western-sounding quality. I chose this song because I liked the sound of the guzheng and thought it was interesting how a traditional Chinese instrument can be used in a piece that also has some Western musical characteristics.
