I chose this song because of the instrumentation and the format. This song is in the form of a raga. The alap ends at 0:45 where the Tabla and one other percussive instrument join the song. This song also features two Tamburas, a flute, and one other string instrument that I unfortunately cannot identify. Additionally, the melody in this song is coming from a vocal line, taking the place of the usual Sarod. The vocal line is performed by Bombay Jayashri, a well-known Indian artist, who performed this song at her “Listening to Life” concert. Furthermore, Bombay Jayashri seems to be the main vocalist of the group, but she is performing with a chorus of other women singing with her. While some sources say that Sindhu Bhairavi Thillana has both Hindustani and Caratic influence, the word Thillana in the title suggests that it is more commonly known to have Caratic influence. By definion, Thillana means a rhythmic piece of South Indian music that is most likely to be played at the end of a concert. Enjoy!
