“Phool Ko Thunga” is a Nepalese folk song recorded by Nepalese band Kutumba. This band is a modern-day band that plays music only using traditional Nepalese instruments, and they often collaborate with other artists to preserve Nepalese music traditions. The piece utilizes a bamboo flute to play the melody and a madal, a skinhead drum, to maintain a rhythm. The madal has two distinct sounds coming from the two ends, which are both covered in a skin and are different sizes so they can resonate different pitches. This means it can be used for both rhythmic and lyrical functions within a song. Eventually a second flute is introduced so the two flutes may duet with each other, one playing a much higher melody and the other playing a lower, more resonant harmony.
