The song I selected is a traditional Laotian song, with heavy use of the Khaen. The reason I chose this example is that I have a friend from my high school who is from Laos, and I asked him if he had any examples of traditional Lao music that he has heard/listened to before, and it’s what he sent me, and I enjoyed it! It comes from an album by Nouthong, who is an expert Khaen user, and the title of the song means “traditional/ancient song”. Overall, it is a polyphonic khaen solo, where there is a note that seems to play continuously throughout the song, while there is a rhythmic melody being layered on top of it. I also noted that it sounded very similar to a bagpipe and almost Scottish music, which is another aerophone.
