The song Nuestra Canción, translated to “Our Song” in English, by Columbian band Monsieur Perine, featuring Vicente Garcia, was released from the studio album Caja de Musica. Though there were many pieces that came to mind when thinking of music from South America, this one stood out to me the most. Though originally released in 2015, Nuestra Cancion gained booming popularity in the culture of American youth in 2021 through the social media app TikTok. At this time, many individuals were still masked, quarantined, and practicing social distancing in response to COVID 19 and were seeking ways to connect with others, in this case through song and dance. Though there are some similarities between this piece and the examples from class, most prominently the function of dance music, the sound is certainly distinct from what we have heard so far. This song is text-focused, with lyrics sung in harmony by a male and female vocalist, accompanied by guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, flute, horn, tuba, drum set, and tambourine. Monster Perine identifies their “sound” as a hybrid of various genres including son, bolero, tango, and samba. This funky mix, combined with the easy-going swing feel, is the perfect equation for such a light-hearted song fully deserving of the popularity it reared.
