“LÝ NGÚA Ô,” which can be translated as “Song of the Black Horse,” is a traditional folk song associated with southern Vietnam. This instrumental recording features the dan tranh, a Vietnamese plucked zither that traditionally has sixteen strings. The performer creates an expressive melody through rapid plucking and pitch bending. These techniques give the music a flowing quality while also creating changes in pitch, dynamics, and intensity. The performance connects to nhac tai tu, which commonly incorporates instruments such as the dan tranh and emphasizes musical expression. I chose this example because the dan tranh was discussed in class and I wanted to hear how it could perform a different Vietnamese melody. I especially enjoyed the bright tone of the instrument and how one instrument could create such a detailed and energetic performance.
