I selected “Kolohe” by Wavvy and 8RO8 because not only does it make me reminisce about my Hawaiian heritage, but I feel that the song’s rhythm and smooth melody paint a visual picture of the smooth ocean waves and beauty that Hawaii has to offer. Additionally, the vocals performed by Wavvy and 8RO8, accompanied by the ukulele, create a modern timbre as you listen. Importantly, this reflects the purpose of the song, as Wavvy and 8RO8 pay homage to the classic local Hawaiian song “Cool Down” by Kolohe Kai. Overall, in my opinion, “Kolohe” perfectly exemplifies the culture and identity of the Hawaiian Islands by fusing revitalized Hawaiian reggae with R&B.
