“Haruru Ana” is a folk song that comes from the Māori people, the second largest ethnic group in New Zealand. I had been familiar with this group because I have seen videos of Māori people performing the haka, which is a popular performance with intense movements, stomping and expressive shouting. I really admire their culture and the performances that I have seen, so I decided to look more into the group. I found various traditional songs by the Māori, and I found the Turakina Māori Girls’ Choir, which performed many of these traditional pieces. I struggled to pick just one song to share, so I definitely recommend exploring additional songs from this group. I picked “Haruru Ana” because I think the song is lovely and I like the harmony throughout and because it has elements of haka with grunting and clapping noises throughout the piece.
