I picked the song “Enta Omri” by Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum.

It is an Arabic song from Egypt, and I believe it is a good example of Middle Eastern music.

I chose this song because I feel like I can hear the same instruments we learned about in class. I can hear a maqam, as well as the singer’s ornamented singing. This example also uses other traditional Middle Eastern instruments, and the ensemble is similar to the example we listened to and talked about in class.

I also chose this example because I liked the overall sound of the instruments and of the female vocalist. I felt like her ornamented singing made it easy to hear the characteristics of this country’s music that we talked about. I also really liked how it started slower, then the tempo really picked up, and how it seemed to get louder as it got faster.
