The song I chose is Arirang, a Korean folk song and I am unable to find the composer for this piece. I researched and found that John Barnes Chance composed variations on this song but that’s all I could find. The word “arirang” doesn’t directly translate to anything, but the song means “my beloved one”. This was actually one of the first recordings I found when researching songs originating from Asia and really enjoyed it. I like the fact that there is more vocals than instruments in the piece.

The song starts with the steady (syncopated) beat of a drum and definitely an aerophone as well. The sound is very legato and the texture is polyphonic. The vocalist joins the instruments at 0:17 with a simplistic monotone & light female voice. She gradually increases pitch and the drums lessen. A lot of the lyrics are repetitive but it is a very beautiful and calming piece of music. I chose this piece because i really enjoyed that it involved more vocals than instruments unlike my other chosen pieces.
