I chose the song “The Hungry Dingo” because throughout chapter 4, we learn about the didjeridu. It is a very important instrument to the Aboriginal people of Australia. Throughout this piece, the performer plays the entire song on the didjeridu without the accompaniment of any other instruments or voices making it a monophony. Although this piece only contains one instrument, the performer used multiple different tones to make it sound more textured. Before he starts playing, he describes what the song is about and what each sound represents. The song is about a dingo who is hungry and hunting kangaroos. There are 4 main sounds he describes before playing: the sound of the mom kangaroo hopping, the joey keeping up, a bird in the sky warning the kangaroos about the dingo, and the dingo following the kangaroos. This piece really interests me because the performer told an entire story on one instrument that does not contain any notes. He used impeccable circular breathing to perform almost a three minute song. While performing, he used hand motions to really let you experience the song. It helped me understand what was happening along the way. Overall, this song was very impressive and really allows you to understand how powerful a single instrument can be.
