This song is called “Rorogwela” and it is a lullaby from the Solomon Islands, a nation of islands east of Papua New Ginuea. This recording is sung by a woman named Afunakwa and it was actually collected by an ethnomusicologist which is where it gained its popularity.  The recording of this song has no instruments playing and the focus is on the one woman’s soft voice.  The lyrics roughly translate to a the words of an older sibling comforting their younger brother after the loss of their parents.  I chose this song because I did a project on the Solomon Islands when I was in high school, and I remembered that music was a very important form of expression in their culture and I wanted to hear some examples.  This is the song I chose to share because even though it is under two minutes in length, I thought it was a very powerful piece since there are only vocals translating the message and raw feelings.  I think this fact ties very well to the idea of one person desperately trying to comfort another.  This song was released in 1973 in a collection, but the song was actually recorded sometime in the previous few years.
