I chose the song “Giawkhao Thailand (Harvest Song from Thailand).” I found it on YouTube while looking for classical Thai songs, it stuck out to me because I recognized a lot of the instruments that we talked about in class. In the video there are two Ranat ek, which remind me of a xylophones, two Khong wong yai, which is a gong circle, and there are a couple of people playing drums. I believe the person in the middle playing the wind instrument is playing a pi nai, which is a quadruple reed instrument. One part that really stood out to me was around four minutes into the song it slows down a lot and almost completely stops and then suddenly starts again really loud. I also noticed an echoing effect that was different from what we listened to in class. One of the people playing the Khong wong yai would play a rhythm or a few notes, and then the rest of the group would repeat it back, which I thought sounded really cool and was different from anything else we’ve listened to.
