The song I chose is called “Bula Maleya,” and it is a traditional Fijian welcome song. Originally, this song was created to celebrate the cooperation between Fijian and Malayan soldiers during World War II, but it has now been transformed into a welcome song, often used to greet tourists arriving on the island. I chose this song because I liked how joyful it sounded. The song also doesn’t seem too complex, so I think it would be easy enough for me to learn. In the video, a group of male and female singers is performing together while clapping a steady beat. There are also chordophones in this song, since a ukulele and two guitars are being played. This song has a steady rhythm that is easy to follow because of the clapping, and the melody is simple because it is repetitive. At the beginning, it is only the male voices singing, but at about 49 seconds into the video, the female voices join in, and they all sing the same lyrics together. This makes the texture of the song seem thicker since more voices are singing. The dynamics of the song are pretty loud and clear the entire time, but when the female voices join in, the volume gets even louder and remains that way for the rest of the video. Overall, I really enjoyed the upbeat and happy feel of this song.
