This song borrows electric instrumentation and structure to combine modern rock with traditional Indigenous Australian instruments, like the didgeridoo, and versus sung in the Gumatj language. The song’s driving beat is based on djatpangarri, a traditional Yolngu popular music style. It was written as a political protest song demanding that the Australian government fulfill its promise to sign an official treaty with Indigenous Australians. I chose this song as I come from Australia and my dad used to play this song and band a lot when I was younger, so it something I knew well already. Another reason is that the song and band itself are well known across the older generations in Australia, so it is awesome that a song and band with Indigenous artists and aspects was as popular as it was.
