“Flower of Scotland” is a Scottish folk song that has become an unofficial national anthem of Scotland. The song was originally written by Roy Williamson, one-half of the Scottish folk duo The Corries. It was written in the mid-1960s and what I think captures the spirit of Scottish pride quite well. The lyrics of the song invoke the historic Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 which secured Scotland’s independence. This song represents the national identity and the title is also a reference to the thistle, which is a symbol of Scotland. I chose this song because it shows us the spirit of the Scottish people and their fight for independence. The song is filled with bagpipes and is a grand group song which I think is very exciting and interesting.
