Waltzing Matilda is a song of rather notable Australian significance. At first it simply sounds dancing with a lass named Matilda, however that is not the case. The waltzing refers to carrying a swag and Matilda is that swag. The swag being a roll/bundle of your possessions carried on your back. The song essentially narrates the misadventures of a travelling worker which, when closely examined, demonstrate the poor and borderline cruel treatment of Australian workers during that time. Becoming a rallying cry during that period of economic downturn that would still linger in the public consciousness to this day. It’s a rather chipper song so the messages and themes may initially be overlooked until one “clicks” with the lyrics. Personally I chose this as my interest in world history made me vaguely aware of it’s existence so having an excuse to learn why this seeming chipper but dated song still held cultural significance.
