I chose this piece for my song share this week because I really enjoyed listening to it. A lot of Hindustani music I listened to sounded the same but this one stood out from the others. I loved how this piece started off in this hypnotic/dream-like state, which just felt so flow to me. It began a little more improvised sounding and the beat of the tabla didn’t come in until about 1 minute into the piece, and it didn’t start to pick up pace until 5 minutes into the piece. The melody of the piece made me think of a snake charmer, it just had this really unique essence. I really enjoyed the sitar, played by Anoushka Shankar. I have never taken the time before taking this class to sit down and really listen to different instruments and watch them played, but after doing so with this piece, I found I really enjoy the sitar. I really like the the sound that can be made from the curve frets of the sitar. It adds a really cool element to any piece it is played with. I not only listened to this piece but watched everyone playing each instrument in the video and it was really crazy how fast Anoushka was able to play the sitar, especially with how large it is. Overall this piece had a really cool style and I loved how it built on the melody and just evolved into this amazing performance.
