I started to explore Ravi Shankar after hearing about his collaborations alongside George Harrison. This track in particular was originally released in the late 90s under the album Chants of India, but resurfaced to exemplify ideas of patience during 2020. The song feels more vocal led, with stringed interludes, consistent drones and somewhat sparse percussion all complementing the vocal. I found it interesting the song takes inspiration both from religious texts and from that collaboration with Harrison; certain structures like the panning of an instrument more to one side, or the vocals being a center focus of the song feel more inspired from western music, however the drones, choices of instrumentation, and meditative qualities all signify it as its own piece of art, separate from a pop song. I also appreciate how the structure of the song isn’t to be calm in order to build up; the calmness of the track is one of the main emotions shared most clearly. Overall the song shares insight to how music can both have inspiration and differentiate itself clearly to attain the qualities it looked to convey.
