I decided to choose this song due to the African influence it has while predominantly spoken in English. I find this song so interesting as there is only the Linda Ronstadt, an African singer, and Paul Simon who are singing, while a big band plays behind them. I chose this song because I knew it and I am a very big Paul Simon fan. I realize that in this song, in the refrain, there seems to be some foreign words spoken. I think it is amazing that Paul Simon was able to have an African concert. Most of the background music is guitars and keyboards, but even at that, it doesn’t sound like the song is from American. I believe it sounds foreign as some parts of the song seem like it could be a call and response with the instruments and there is a lot of repetitiveness within the background instruments. The noises like “Ba hoom” in the chorus reminds me of something that would be from the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” which gives it a rich African background. Overall, I think this is a very good song, and a good example of cross genre in African music.
