The song I chose is “Tunak Tunak Tun” by Dale Mehndi. I was introduced to this song last year from the men’s tennis team. They loved to listen to this song for warmups, so I immediately thought about it when we began talking about South Asian music. As I looked into the background of the song, I found it very fascinating. The song is a Bhangre/Indi-pop song which was released in 1998. It was the first-ever Indian music video made using chroma key technology. Because of the catchy rhythm and tune of the song, Mehndi was named India’s most popular pop star at that time. Not only was the song a success in India, but it also gained a lot of attention internationally, even garnering a cult following. In the song, the lyrics “Tunka Tunak Tun” are about the sounds made by a tumbi. The tumbi is a traditional musical instrument which is from the Punjab region, located in the northern Indian subcontinent. The energy of the song is so fun and memorable that I am really glad I could share it!
