After listening to the song Thou Shall not Steal by Kev Carmody there are lots of different points that this song makes. For example right in the beginning of the music video it shows the words genocide, hypocrisy, white man, 200 years, and rage. The song addresses the topic of indigenous peoples’ rights to their homelands. It discusses the failed promises, such as not providing better treatment for the poor, and the hypocrisy of white people who advise Black people they should not steal when they themselves took land from the Aboriginal people. The song also discusses how the European religion that they brought to Australia was forced onto the Indigenous people in an attempt to “civilize” them, which caused a conflict with their spirituality and sense of self.
In lyric 6 he says “Hypocrisy”, which the song explores the issue of hypocrisy, where Kev Carmody talks about how they are both consciously and unconsciously committing acts of evil by killing Indigenous people when “their Jesus said to give the oppressed a better deal.” Another part that caught my attention in this song was from lyric 8 where he says “Our gain’s your loss” this is explaining how the fact that while the Indigenous inhabitants in Australia suffered from disease, trauma, and other negative consequences, the colonists gained land, resources, and other advantages from their settlement.
I chose this specific song because its not only just a song to sing along to or dance to, it also explains and shows a huge thing that happened a while ago and gives us information on what is going on. It is a song that has a huge meaning behind it, where we not only can listen and get a rhythm to it but how we can also learn more and know more.
