This song is called the Coo-Coo Bird. It is performed by Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson. It is an example of Appalachian music from the 1960s. Appalachian music is credited with the origins of many popular music forms today. Some of these are modern country music, bluegrass, folk, and some forms of indie music. This piece, along with many other types of Appalachian music has a strong presence of the banjo. In fact, it is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Appalachian music. I chose this example because I really enjoy country music and especially acoustic country music. I love folk music and the simple messages behind the lyrics coupled with simple, yet beautiful instrumentals. I just think this kind of music is “the real country music” compared to the more recent pop country.
