Stravinsky was originally from Europe, but when he came to America he wasn’t able to bring the money he earned from his work in Europe due to copyright issues. When he first arrived in America he was so broke that he decided to write a new piece of work for the sole purpose of making money. Tango for Orchestra is the first score he wrote entirely in America.
Tango for orchestra consists of 4 bar phrase structures, and included the typical rhythmic structure of a tango, with the syncopation landing on the second beat of each measure. (Syncopated Tango rhythm (1&-&3 4)). Not typically found in orchestral settings, but almost always found in tangos, this arrangement includes a guitar. The rest of the instrumentation includes; 4 clarinets, a bass clarinet, 2 trumpets and a trombone. The strings section includes 3 violins, a viola, cello, and a double bass.
