This video is a collection of five different Indonesian folk songs recorded in 2012 in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. While it was recorded in a different country, the original piece was written and performed in Jakarta, Indonesia by a cultural music performance group called Angsana Prabala, which is affiliated with the college Bengkel Kreasi Seni Teknik (BKST), Faculty of Engineering – University of Indonesia. The pieces are from multiple Southeast Asian areas, such as West Sumatra, Jakarta, Central Java and Bali. These songs seamlessly blend together, enough that I couldn’t tell when one ended and the other began. The style reminds me of America’s drum corps performances, both with the style of music and the instruments used. This is because of the consistent tempo led by the drums, the melody played by the xylophone, and the rhythmic yelling by the performers. This is a mostly instrumental video, but there is melody present in the xylophone-like instrument, which interestingly is played with only one mallet. Vocals are also present at times but it’s more chanting and speaking tones than singing, and it is accompanied by multiple Indonesian percussion instruments, both membranophones and metallophones. I was bopping my head along throughout all the pieces, and it was very enjoyable to both watch and listen to.
