This song is titled Sanza Nocturne – Francis Bebey. Francis Bebey was a musicologist, musician and composer from Douala, Cameroon. This piece has an instrument called the sanza, which is also known as the mbira, kalimba, or thumb piano, as we discussed in class. The song has a light melody on the sanza that is in the forefront of the texture, accompanied by percussion and eventually a guitar. Overall, the melody is a soft, medium sounding melody. The song is also repetitive and is very groove based. I learned about this artist from a friend and dove in, and I really enjoyed listening to this song. I thought it was very relaxing to listen to and listened to a handful of the other songs on this album – I would highly recommend checking it out because it spans across a variety of different sounds with various artists!
