This piece is considered the most sacred composition in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. It has been played for the opening ceremonies of religious events as well as feasts, typically played when ‘inviting’ and blessing necessary holy items. There are 25 different versions of the melody that have been documented since it was originally passed down orally from teacher to student and this piece is noted as necessary to be written down. All musicians in these areas are required to learn this piece.
