I chose this song and found it on YouTube because the ensemble sounded different from the listening examples we heard in class and the music video intrigued me. The music video depicted three men sitting in the middle of nowhere playing their instruments, but it was captivating. This song was created by the Faran Ensemble. This ensemble consists of three men playing three different instruments. Their name, Faran, means “a dry desert riverbed which in winter fills with water and life and in summer is silent and pristine.” The instruments used in this song are a kamancheh, which is a stringed bow instrument, the oud, which is a plucked string instrument resembling a guitar, and lastly percussion, using the daf which is a large frame drum. The music has a somber sound and feeling, but features a simple texture. The daf brings a low, background sound while the kamancheh brings a higher pitched sound throughout. The song has a repetitive melody for the daf and oud, but the kamancheh is able to ornament and improvise above the other two instruments. There is also a large crescendo starting around the three minute mark of the song. In the middle, the oud takes on a solo that is very low in volume and simple and slow with few notes being played.
