The song Kao Nok by Molam Lao was released in 1994 in the album Music from Southern Laos alongside many similar pieces. While listening to the album, this piece stuck out to me mostly because its simplicity; there is a monophonic melody performed by the Khen, which is a bamboo percussion instrument with a sound similar to a xylophone. Aside from this, there are no other instruments present, which allows for a beautiful stand alone performance. In terms of pitch, dynamics, and tempo, there is little variation throughout the steady flow of the piece. Despite this, the music seems to have a steady forward motion driven by the rhythmic consistency. During my first listen, the image of raindrops sprinkling into a gentle stream came to mind and feelings of serenity and pleasantness seemed to be fitting for the ambience created by this piece.
