This song “Raga Yaman” was created by a well known Indian musician by the name of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. This song is in the genre of Dhrupad, which has been stated to have the purity of Raaga. The purpose of this song is to be used for a meditative/peaceful state (Dhrupad music is used for peaceful states.) Also, this song was released in 1991. I chose this song because I found it very soothing and relaxing, it felt like it slowed my heart down. My first impression of the song is that it’s very soft and peaceful. The song consisted of 2 stringed instruments, which sounded like a tambura, and a sarod (but i’m not quite sure.) The strings that were being played were very low, but then it would go to an occasional high note. It seems like the music is improvised, and free rhythm. Also, the rhythm is very consistent with the tambura, and the volume stays the same volume throughout the song. Finally, each note from the melody is long and slow before playing the next note.
