I chose this song because I decided to do a dive into jazz music for this unit. I found this album which fuses traditional Arab music and jazz, which I thought was a cool fusion. Knowing from Nick’s performance for our class, that he has a jazz background and also plays the oud, I thought it was cool to find a style of music that combined both scenes. At around 1:33 seconds, the horns of the group go to the background and the oud comes to the front, taking a solo. Throughout the song, you can hear a variety of percussion instruments, likely including the riq, seeing as you can hear a tambourine-esque sound. The artist is Rabih Abou Khalil, who studied the oud, and during the Lebanese Civil War in 1978, he moved to Munich, Germany, where he studied classical flute. It was very interesting to dive into an artist that had experience with different regions music.
