This is a performance of a traditional Indian raga, by vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty. This piece has many similar elements to the ragas we have discussed in class, with the drone keeping steady in the back, and the tablas tapping a 16 beat teentaal with some improvisation as well. There is also the appearance of a harmonium, and the rhythms of this instrument compliment the melody of the vocalist. I chose this piece because I was excited to hear a raga with a female vocalist. I loved Chakraborty’s voice and was insanely impressed by how fast she could sing and switch between notes– the text seemed faster than most Western rap singers I have listened to! I also enjoyed watching the video of the performance and how she interacted with her fellow musicians on stage– everyone seemed so comfortable with each other and happy to be performing this piece and that made the song all the more meaningful.
