This is Qanun Taqasim, performed by The Michigan Arab Orchestra Takht Ensemble. It features many instruments including the oud (Arab Lute), qanun (Arab zither), nay (Arab reed flute), violin, bass, and percussion. This ensemble is comprised of musicians from Detroit who perform classical and contemporary Arab music, known as tarab music. The audience plays a vital role in tarab music since listeners will often respond with applause during and after a musician’s improvised solos. I think that this aspect of this music is very interesting because as a performer I love when the audience becomes a part of the show.
