I selected a Polynesian and Tahitian dance song. I’ve decided to talk about this music since I find it to be extremely comforting and joyful. Many of the French Polynesian islands participate in this style, but Tahiti stood out to me. In general, Polynesian music is generally joyful, cheerful, and celebratory. Another characteristic of Polynesian music is its “chanting” style. Similar to the Hawaiian music we discussed in class, this music style typically includes dancing, melody, and harmony. “Mana” is historically given a voice by the Tahitians so that during their songs, she can ascend from the sea. According to others, Tahitian dance and music commemorates their culture, as well as how locals overcame obstacles and kept up their ritualistic musical expressions of life. A majority of this music features voices, furious drumming, and coconut or conch shell clattering.
