This song is called Plum Blossom Melody, originating from China. This song begins at a steady tempo in the first section set by the pipa, which is a four-stringed, pear-shaped lute. However, in the second section, the tempo really slows down and becomes more reflective. The entire song is very meditative and relaxing. The bamboo flute in this piece plays the melody, and you can also hear an erhu, which is a two-stringed bowed fiddle, and a traditional harp being played. The plum blossom is the national flower of China, which is what this song is named after. The flower is a symbol of resilience that exists in the Chinese, which explains why the song is slow, meditative, and reflective. I chose this song because I am very interested in the different kinds of flutes that are played throughout the world, since I used to play the flute. I also really like this kind of contemplative music; I think it’s very peaceful.
