Samba originated as a musical genre stemming from Brazil in the early 20th century. More common now is knowing samba as a dance style as well as a musical genre. It is often performed in the Portuguese language and samba meant “popular music”. The process of establishing Samba as a musical genre began in the early 1900s and it had its inaugural landmark in the song “Pelo Telefone”, launched in 1917. Upon listening, there is a polyrhythmic nature to the instrumentals, as well as a simple melody that repeats. Listening to this makes you want to get up and move your feet, a natural reaction due to the syncopated rhythms often present in Samba music. “Pelo Telefone” translates to “on the telephone”. The common repeated phrase is

The police chief
told me on the telephone
that in the “Carioca” there is a roulette going on

This is a good representation of Samba music prior to turning into the modern dance version many are familiar with today.
