One Love, a classic reggae song, was written by Bob Marley, who was considered one of the main pioneers of reggae music. The popularity of his band increased the visibility of Jamaican music and culture, which was previously a much more niche genre. This song first appeared in 1965 as a ska song, but was redone and re-recorded in 1977 as a reggae song, as became his brand. The song features the classic Jamaican beat on 2 and 4 and features the bass, guitar, piano, drums and voice. This beat sequence increases the laid-back feel of the song, and is accentuated by Marley’s smooth tone and speak-singing. I enjoy this piece because it is very relaxing, laid-back, and well-written musically. I’ve grown up on songs like this, so it is very comforting to me. I also enjoy that it helps promote Jamaican culture and its corresponding music.
