Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla is widely considered to be the father of a revolutionized field of tango music, termed nuevo tango. His work includes the most widely known tangos the world over, and this piece, Oblivion, is one of the best known of his prolific discography. I chose this work out of his many, partially to avoid what I perceive as his most well known work, Libertango, and because I enjoy the solemn and melancholic melodies Piazzolla weaves, expertly capturing the mood with his masterfully sensitive bandoneon playing and rich string backgrounds.
